The kids were so happy when we got to Adelaide. Not because they have any particular penchant for cities, although they don't have an aversion to them, either.
They were just so happy to be staying in the relative luxury of Adelaide Meridien, where their interconnected room had sumptuous beds wide enough to starfish in, and a big television (with no rabbit ears).
I was just looking forward to soaking in the bubble bath. After my dinner date, that is.
I didn't get to meet with my friend and old flatmate, Kirsty, last time I was in Adelaide because she was in Queensland. But this time she was at home, and it was great to catch up. We ate (and drank sake) at Sato Japanese restaurant, on Melbourne St, just down the road from the hotel.
Kirsty gave us the hot tips of what to do and see the next day, so our first stop was the Central Market where we loaded up on bread, olives, salami and the most sublime, creamy smooth cheese from (I love this name) The Smelly Cheese Shop.
Then we headed for the beach.
[This is a fairly rare event, but I have to admit I was wrong about the bikes. In my last post about Adelaide, I'd gone on about the fantastic wide, level streets with bike lanes and nary a soul using them. I thought it was crazy that I didn't see anyone riding pushies. Perhaps I didn't see them last time, but on the way to the beach this time, I saw tonnes. In fact, Adelaide is so keen on bikes they are giving them away – well, kind of. 'Adelaide City Bikes' is a council initiative, one part of their strategy "to acheive a cleaner and greener city", which offers free, unlimited bike hire during daylight hours. Bikes can be picked up and dropped off at one of 8 locations spread throughout the city, including our hotel – The Meridien, and maps with points of interest are provided. Just one more reason for me to love Adelaide!]
The beach at Glenelg
The water was too icy for me, but I convinced the kids that they had to experience it.

Love this…
Waiting for sunset at Henley Beach…
Looking good… (wish I could do headstands!)
I'm glad we waited!
(How funny is his shooting mound….)
Ah! The colours.
About as a good a sunset as you could ever wish for
Spectacular paintings in the sky!
The shooter
and the shot
We'd spotted this restaurant, Salsa, last time we were in Adelaide and thought it looked very cool – all 50's decor and palm trees. So we wanted to try it out.
It does look funky and our Italian meals were yummy, but holy moley don't order the kids' meals. I can't remember if Evan's spaghetti and meatballs was $12 or $13, but it doesn't matter because the bowl of pasta was the size of a large teacup, and it only had two meatballs in it! Our dishes were on the upper end of reasonable, so I'm not sure what's going on with the kids serves.
Next morning was breakfast of (more) cheese and bread in the sun on the balcony of our room.
Then it was time to hit the road again.
